Alberta might not have an ocean, but it has world-class trout fishing, trophy pike and walleye, and some of the most stunning fishing landscapes in Canada. The province has also invested in accessible fishing infrastructure — stocked ponds with accessible platforms, paved paths to rivers, and adaptive programs that get wheelchair users fishing.
Accessible Stocked Trout Ponds
Alberta's Ace in the Hole
Alberta stocks over 200 ponds and lakes with rainbow trout, brook trout, and brown trout annually. Many of these have accessible fishing platforms, paved paths, and accessible parking. This is the easiest way to go fishing from a wheelchair in Alberta — show up, cast from a platform, and catch fish.
Top Accessible Stocked Ponds

Rocky Mountain Fishing
Banff National Park
Lake Minnewanka has a paved boat launch area and some accessible shoreline. Fishing for lake trout from shore or by renting an accessible-friendly motorboat (check with rental operators). Johnson Lake has an accessible path and fishing from shore. Vermilion Lakes has roadside pull-offs where you can fish from level ground.
Kananaskis Country
Multiple accessible fishing ponds including Wedge Pond (paved trail, accessible platform, stocked cutthroat trout) and Barrier Lake (accessible day-use area with shoreline fishing). Stunning mountain scenery.
Bow River — Calgary
One of the best urban trout rivers in the world. Brown and rainbow trout. The Bow River pathway system is paved and accessible for much of its length through Calgary. Several access points have ramps to river level. Float trips on drift boats may have limited accessibility — inquire with outfitters.
Alberta has great freshwater — but nothing beats saltwater salmon from an accessible boat. Our purpose-built charter in Campbell River, BC is a short flight from Calgary or Edmonton. Ramp boarding, wheelchair tie-downs, trained crew. See our Pacific coast tours.
Northern Alberta
Lac La Biche
Walleye, pike, perch, and whitefish. Sir Winston Churchill Provincial Park (on an island in the lake) has accessible camping and fishing. The town has accessible boat launches. Ice fishing in winter from heated accessible shacks is an option.
Lesser Slave Lake
One of Alberta's largest lakes. Walleye, pike, perch. The provincial park has accessible facilities and a wide sandy beach. Shore fishing is possible from accessible areas. The annual fishing derby draws anglers from across the province.
Accessible Ice Fishing
Alberta's Winter Advantage
Ice fishing can actually be more accessible than open-water fishing. Many outfitters offer heated ice shacks that you drive right up to — roll in, fish through the hole, stay warm. The flat ice surface is easier to navigate than shoreline terrain.
- - Heated shacks with flat floors — roll right in
- - Vehicle access directly onto the ice (on lakes that allow it)
- - No hills, no stairs, no rough terrain
- - Fish species: walleye, pike, perch, burbot, lake trout
- - Season: December through March (depending on ice conditions)

Why Alberta Anglers Are Flying to Campbell River
Trout Ponds Are Great. But Have You Fought a 30-Pound Chinook?
Alberta's stocked ponds and mountain streams are beautiful. But there's nothing in freshwater that compares to hooking a Pacific chinook salmon on the ocean. The rod bends in half, the reel screams, and you're fighting a fish that weighs more than most Alberta trout you've ever caught — all from the deck of a boat that was built specifically for your wheelchair.
Campbell River is a 90-minute direct flight from Calgary or Edmonton. Wheelin N Reeling Adventures is the only purpose-built wheelchair accessible fishing charter in Canada. No "let's see if we can make it work." Just roll up the ramp and go.
The Alberta-to-BC Trip
- Fly direct: Calgary/Edmonton to Campbell River (Pacific Coastal Airlines) or to Comox/Vancouver + short drive
- Drive: 10-hour scenic drive through the Rockies + BC Ferries (accessible) from Horseshoe Bay to Nanaimo
- Stay: Accessible hotels in Campbell River (we can recommend options)
- Fish: Salmon, halibut, crab — plus orcas, eagles, seals. Your caregiver rides free.
On AISH and can't afford the trip? Our Sponsor a Trip program funds charters for people on government assistance — including Albertans.
