Species Profiles

Chinook (King) Salmon

The undisputed king. Campbell River's chinook run from May through August, with fish averaging 15-25 lbs and trophies exceeding 40 lbs. These are powerful fish — a 30-pounder will bend your rod in half and take 15-20 minutes to land. Peak months are June and July when the big tyee-class fish arrive.

Peak: Jun-Jul Avg: 15-25 lbs Trophy: 40+ lbs Method: Trolling

Coho (Silver) Salmon

The acrobat. Coho are famous for explosive surface strikes and aerial leaps. They average 8-15 lbs but fight like fish twice their size. The fall coho run (August-September) is one of the most exciting fishing experiences in BC. These fish are aggressive and eager to bite.

Peak: Aug-Sep Avg: 8-15 lbs Fighter: Jumps! Method: Trolling

Pink Salmon

The most abundant Pacific salmon. Pinks run in odd years in massive numbers and are fun to catch on light tackle. They average 4-7 lbs and are great eating. In even years, numbers are lower but they're still around. Great for beginners — they bite aggressively and are easy to hook.

Peak: Jul-Aug Avg: 4-7 lbs Beginner-friendly

Halibut

Pacific halibut are the biggest fish you'll encounter on our charters. These flatfish live on the ocean floor and can weigh 20-100+ lbs. Fighting a halibut is like pulling a barn door from the bottom — pure arm-burning power. We use electric reels for guests who need them, making halibut fishing accessible for all ability levels. Best months are June and July.

Peak: Jun-Jul Avg: 20-40 lbs Trophy: 100+ lbs

Lingcod

Ugly fish, incredible eating. Lingcod are aggressive predators that hit hard and fight dirty. They average 10-20 lbs with trophies over 40 lbs. Often caught while fishing for halibut or bottom fishing near rocky reefs. They're available all season but peak in fall when they move shallow.

Peak: Sep-Oct Avg: 10-20 lbs Best eating

Dungeness Crab

Sweet, delicious, and fun to catch. On our crabbing tours, you'll pull traps from the ocean floor and sort your catch on deck. No fishing skills required — just pull the line and see what's inside. We cook them fresh for you on shore if you'd like. Available all season, best June through August.

Peak: Jun-Aug No skill needed Cook on shore

Wildlife You'll See

Fishing is only part of the experience. Campbell River's waters are alive with wildlife, and you'll see many of these from the deck of the boat on every trip.

  • Orca (Killer Whales) Jun-Oct

Northern resident orcas feed on salmon in these waters. Sightings are common June through October, especially July-August when salmon runs peak.

  • Humpback Whales May-Oct

Humpbacks have returned to these waters in large numbers. Breaching, tail slapping, and bubble-net feeding. Increasingly common from May onward.

  • Bald Eagles Year-round

Campbell River has one of the highest concentrations of bald eagles in Canada. You'll see them perched, soaring, and diving for fish. Every trip.

  • Harbour Seals & Sea Lions Year-round

Seals and Steller sea lions hang out on rocks and follow fishing boats. Curious and entertaining — they'll watch you fish.

  • Pacific White-Sided Dolphins Jun-Sep

Pods of dolphins sometimes ride the bow wave of the boat. Fast, playful, and a thrill to see up close.

  • Black Bears Jul-Oct

Visible on the shoreline, especially near river mouths during salmon runs. We sometimes spot them from the boat on Quadra Island tours.

When Should You Book?

For Trophy Chinook: June-July

If you want the biggest fish of your life, book June or July. This is when the tyee-class chinook (30+ lbs) are running. These are the most popular months — book early.

For Action & Variety: August

August has the most species overlap. Chinook are still around, coho are arriving, pinks are running, halibut and crab are good. Orca sightings peak. The best all-around month.

For Coho & Fall Magic: September-October

Fall is quieter, the colours are stunning, and the coho are aggressive. Lingcod fishing is at its best. Fewer crowds, great weather. Our favourite time to fish.
