First Season Recap: What We Learned

When we launched Wheelin N Reeling Adventures in May 2025, we had a boat, a plan, and a lot of optimism. Now, with the season behind us, here's what actually happened.

What Worked

The boat works. That was the big question going in — did we actually build something that lets wheelchair users fish comfortably and safely? The answer is yes. Every single guest told us the boarding ramp, tie-down system, and deck layout worked exactly as promised. Nobody had to be lifted. Nobody had to transfer out of their chair. They rolled on, got strapped in, and went fishing.

The fishing was outstanding. Campbell River lived up to its reputation. Chinook season was strong in June and July, and the coho run in August and September was incredible. Multiple guests caught their personal best fish. One guest — a C6 quadriplegic using an electric reel — landed a 28-pound chinook.

What Surprised Us

The emotional impact was bigger than we expected. We planned for the logistics — ramps, tie-downs, adaptive equipment. What we didn't fully plan for was the moment a guest fights their first fish from a wheelchair and realizes they can do this. Multiple people got emotional. One guest told us it was the first time he'd been on the water since his accident 8 years ago.

The caregiver experience matters as much as the guest's. Caregivers and family members told us they never expected to relax on a boat trip. Usually they're stressed about transfers, accessibility, and whether things will work. On our boat, they got to sit back, enjoy the scenery, and actually have fun alongside their person.

What We're Changing

Sun protection needs to be better. Several guests with SCI mentioned that temperature regulation was an issue on hot days. We're adding a larger bimini top for shade and keeping spray bottles and cooling towels on board.

Communication before the trip needs to be more detailed. The more we know about a guest's specific situation before they arrive, the smoother the experience. We're creating a pre-trip questionnaire that covers wheelchair type, transfer needs, medical considerations, and fishing preferences.

Looking Ahead

Season two is going to be better. We know what to expect now. The boat is proven, the crew is experienced, and the demand is real. We're already taking bookings for next season — if you're thinking about it, don't wait too long. June and July fill up fast.

Be Part of Season Two

We're booking now for the upcoming season. Salmon, halibut, crab, and wildlife — all from a boat that was built for your wheelchair.
